Rock Hack Talking To Rock Stars

November 9, 2013

One of the great things about being a rock hack is getting to interview so many cool people. Sure, there are times when writing about music after a long stint at the day job becomes tiring but when you have the opportunity to speak to awesome people like Sammy Hagar and Nikki Sixx there’s little to complain about.

I frequently get asked for advice by music fans who want to write about music and the fact is there’s next to no money involved, and so the benefits of writing about music for free are getting free CDs (this has declined dramatically in recent years due to the rise of digital music) and tickets to gigs as well as the odd free book and DVD to review but the best part is undoubtedly speaking to the musicians. On my blog I’ve listed many of the musicians I’ve interviewed, which is linked below.

Fortunately I got to speak to the late great Ronnie James Dio before he sadly passed away. What a gentleman! I had a few pleasurable hour long phone conversation with him ditto Kevin DuBrow, the late lead singer of Quiet Riot. He was great to chat with, too. Despite the frosty reception that was greeted by Priest’s management prior to the publication of my book Defenders Of The Faith I interviewed Glenn Tipton and KK Downing several months before I began writing the book and they were great to chat to as well.

I can’t say I have had any difficult interviews. If the phone line is fuzzy, sure, it can be a tad awkward and stressful but on the whole I’ve enjoyed interviewing musicians, immensely. There are still so many great musicians that I’d love to speak to; the list is endless, really.

In my mammoth 400+ page book Hard Rock Rebels I’ve compiled almost every interview I’ve conducted and had published (or unpublished in some cases). I’ve yet to compile all the interviews I’ve done for my books; that one is due later next year.

Hard Rock Rebels consists of the interviews I’ve done for magazines and websites. It’s a cool book and I’ve had a lot of good feedback from readers about it. There are lengthy interviews with the aforementioned rockers as well as Tim “Ripper” Owens, Blaze Bayley, Geoff Tate, Brian tattler, Biff Byford, Joey Tempest and dozens more.
