Rock Biogs For 2013

May 24, 2013

Okay, you rock lovin’ people, you. Here are details of my forthcoming books for the year. I’m just completed the first draft of my first book for 2014 but it’s far too early to announce details yet. Suffice it to say that a certain period in the history of this particular British metal band has never been written about in such minute detail before. Details to follow later in the year. But for now:

HIGH STAKES & DANGEROUS MEN – THE UFO STORY

Published by Soundcheck Books, August 1

UFO are one of heavy rock’s most influential groups, admired by Metallica, Iron Maiden, Pearl Jam and Slash from Guns N Roses, amongst others. Albums like Lights Out, Obsession and Strangers In The Night have all achieved classic status.

The list of musicians who have passed through their ranks reads like a Who’s Who of rock: Pete Way (God bless him), Michael Schenker, Larry Wallis, Bernie Marsden, Paul Chapman, Billy Sheehan, Jason Bonham, Aynsley Dunbar and more, have all done time in one of the most enduring, and endearing, bands.

Using extensive research and first hand interviews, top metal writer Neil Daniels traces UFO s history from their space rock roots in 1969 through to the present day, as the band, with original member Phil Mogg, just keep on rocking. The book contains a wealth of anecdotes about a group renowned for partying as hard as they rock and doing nothing by halves.

High Stakes & Dangerous Men includes a foreword by the American broadcaster and author Eddie Trunk and an afterword by British rock journalist Peter Makowski.

REINVENTING METAL – THE TRUE STORY OF PANTERA AND THE TRAGICALLY SHORT LIFE OF DIMEBAG DARRELL

Published by Backbeat Books, October 23

Pantera is widely regarded as one of the most influential and revered American metal bands of the past 20 years. Although its output was relatively short from 1983 to 2000 it released only nine studio albums its impact on the metal scene since the band split up in 2003 is still felt to this day. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was tragically killed in 2004 but his legacy remains undiminished. Pantera had an enormous influence on nu-metal, groove metal, metalcore, and grindcore and continues to be publicized and written about. Its 1990 breakthrough album Cowboys from Hell is still regarded as one of the greatest metal albums in history, as is Pantera s sixth opus, Vulgar Display of Power.

Reinventing Metal includes a foreword by Jeff Waters of Annihilator and an afterword by Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records

LET IT ROCK – THE STORY OF BON JOVI’S SLIPPERY WHEN WET

Published by Soundcheck Books, November 1

This book is an unashamed celebration of the landmark album Slippery When Wet; Bon Jovi’s most successful album to date, with sales of over 28 million copies since its 1986 release, and one of the most toe-tappingly gleeful albums to ever ring out from a pair of speakers. Everyone knows the rock classics ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’ or ‘You Give Love A Bad Name’, but there isn’t a bum track on the record. This is more than a ‘making of’ type book, because to put Slippery When Wet into context you need to understand what came before and after. It is also a handy fans’ guide to the band’s career with a track by track review, current thoughts on the album from top rock writers, plus bits and pieces that relate directly (or indirectly) to the legacy of a record which spent eight straight weeks at the top of the Billboard charts. The band, of course, are still with us and released an album in the spring of 2013 (What About Now) along with world tour dates, which sees them on the road for most of this year. The book is a large format that looks a bit like a tour programme, and adds to the overall appeal, as it allows for large images of memorabilia inside.

Includes a foreword by former Kerrang! journalist and rock expert Paul Suter and an afterword by A&R supremo Derek Shulman (Simon Dupree And The Big Sound and Gentle Giant), who had the foresight to sign the band in the first place.
